7 Essential Steps to Secure Your Crypto Exchange Account

By BinanceBonus Editorial Team6 min read

1. Use an authenticator app, not SMS

SMS-based two-factor authentication is vulnerable to SIM-swap attacks. An authenticator app (like Google Authenticator or Authy) generates codes locally on your device and is significantly harder to intercept.

2. Set a unique, strong password

Never reuse a password from another site. Use a password manager to generate and store a long, random password specific to your exchange account.

3. Enable withdrawal address whitelisting

Whitelisting restricts withdrawals to pre-approved wallet addresses, adding a critical layer of protection even if your account credentials are ever compromised.

4. Set an anti-phishing code

This unique code appears in every legitimate email the exchange sends you. If an email claiming to be from the exchange is missing your code, treat it as a phishing attempt.

5. Bookmark the official site

Always access your exchange through a bookmarked link or the official app rather than clicking links from emails, ads, or search results, which can be spoofed.

6. Review account activity regularly

Periodically check your login history and active sessions, and immediately revoke access for any device or session you don't recognize.

7. Consider self-custody for long-term holdings

For assets you don't plan to trade actively, moving funds to a personal hardware wallet removes exchange custodial risk entirely. Only you hold the private keys.
